This is an important season when rice, wheat, sugarcane, turmeric, and other cereals were harvested. The name Pongal comes is a Tamil word which translates to “to boil” and it is held in the first day of Tamil month, Thai. It is also widely called Thai Thirunaal meaning Thai festival. The Pongal which falls typically on the mid-January is been considered as a traditional occasion for giving thanks to the nature that gives us grains. People send and exchange pongal gifts and enjoy the occasion with a happiness in their face.
This first day is celebrated as Bhogi festival. It is celebrated in honor of Lord Indra, the supreme ruler of clouds that give rains. On that day homage is rewarded to Lord Indra for the blessing us with the abundance of of harvest, thereby bringing plenty and prosperity to the land. It is celebrated in the early mornig before sunrise by putting the useless and old things into the fire and burn it to ashes. It symbolizes of change and cleaning of the spirit by embracing and introducing different holy excellencies.
The Second Day
The second day is the day of Pongal. Pooja and ceremonies are performed when rice is boiled pot. It is symbolically offered the Sun god along with other oblations. People wear traditional wears that day. Men wear dhotis and women wear sarees. The offerings presented in front of the god includes include the two sticks of sugar-cane in background and coconut and bananas in the dish. Though the Pongal ceremony is carried out more simply but with extensive devotion towards it. On that day people exchange pongal gifts to one another and share the joy.
The Third Day
The third day is known as Mattu Pongal, meaning the day of Pongal for cows. Multi-colored beads, clinking bells, clumps of corn and flower garlands are tied around the neck of the cattle and then are worshiped. Cows are fed with Pongal and taken to the village centers. The sound of their bells attract the villagers as the young men race each other's cattle. The entire atmosphere becomes festive and full of fun and carousing. Arati willbe performed on them, so as to zone off the evil eye. According to a historic story, once Lord Shiva asked his bull, Basava, to go to the earth and ask the mortals to have an oil massage and bath every day and to eat once a month. Unintentionally, Basava announced that everyone should eat daily and have an oil bath once a month. This mistake enraged Shiva who then cursed Basava, expelling him to live on the earth forever. He would have to plough the fields and help people produce more food This is the association of this day with cattle.
The Fourth Day
The Fourth day is known as or Kannum Pongal day. In Tamil Nadu, women perform this ritual before bathing in the morning. All the women, young and old, of the houseassemble in the courtyard. The rice is placed in the centre of the leaf, while the women ask that the house and family of their brothers should prosper. Arati is performed for the brothers with turmeric water, limestone and rice, and this water is sprinkled on the kolam in front of the house. On this day all family members gather and go out to celebrate the day happily.
